Statistical foundations of topological data analysis
Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Mathematics programme.
The position is available from May 2025 or later.
Research area and project description:
The research area for this position is the development of asymptotic results for spatial random networks and for topological data analysis on large random structures. This includes for instance the investigation of novel forms of continuum percolation that can capture higher-order interaction. Moreover, limit results such as the law of large numbers, the central limit theorem, and large deviations theory provide the foundation for basic statistical properties such as consistency and asymptotic normality. This is of high relevance since the statistical foundations of topological data analysis are still in infancy although this methodology is now applied in a variety of domains such as astronomy, biology, chemistry, and materials science. Hence, there is also potential for work in interdisciplinary projects.
For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. When - as here - you apply for a specific project, please simply copy the project description above, and upload it as a PDF in the application. If you wish to, you can indicate an URL where further information can be found.
Qualifications and specifics:
The topic lies at the intersection between probability, statistics and topological data analysis. Hence, the ideal candidate has previous experience in one of these domains and is motivated in learning techniques from the other two.
The place of employment is Aarhus University, and the place of work is Department of Mathematics, Ny Munkegade 118, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.
